Lessons Learned Week 1

I went 3-2 straight up in week 1, and 3-2 against the spread. It should be noted that I picked LSU against the spread, which was -6 at the time, however the spread changed to -4 by kickoff and I would have won that one as well. I didn’t see Texas A&M beating South Carolina in Columbia, but I will never underestimate an offense coached by Kevin Sumlin ever again. I called for Miami to upset Louisville on Monday night and that one fell apart at the seams!

Lessons Learned

  1. I am immediately re-evaluating how good Johnny Manziel really is. I loved watching Manziel play in college and was a big advocate of his, even when he was chugging beers and wearing Tebow jerseys. However, after watching Kenny Hill, it is apparent that any solid QB can flourish in this offense.
  2. Staying on the Texas A&M bandwagon, the Aggies had the most impressive performance of the weekend. While I think South Carolina played terrible and they are much better than their performance, you cannot disregard the fact that the Aggies played in the loudest stadium that college football had to offer this weekend (If you don’t think that is a valid assessment, rewind the tape and watch the Williams-Brice crowd prior to kickoff), and pretty much punched South Carolina in the mouth for 4 quarters.
  3. Georgia will win the SEC East provided Mike Bobo and Mark Richt get their head out of their asses! Gurley only had 4 touches the entire first half and that isn’t going to cut it! Gurley practically had to demand the ball at halftime before BOZO and crew woke up! If you’re going to play for a championship you can’t coach scared, and that’s exactly what the offensive crew did the first half of Saturday’s match-up.
  4. Ohio State desperately misses Braxton Miller, enough said.
  5. Florida State is not as good as they were last year. The loss of talent at receiver and on the defensive side of the ball is obvious. I had Oklahoma State having a down year in the BIG 12 this year and I still stand by this assessment. FSU will not win the Natty this year and Jameis won’t win the Heisman.
  6. Alabama is trending down. Lane Kiffin passed the ball way too much Saturday, exactly what I said he would do in my pre-season projections, and Saban’s defensive strategy still struggles against spread offenses. I called for WVU to have a better year, but they’re not as good as the Tide made them look Saturday.
  7. The Heisman front-runner at this point (and it’s extremely early) is Todd “GODDAMN” Gurley! Gurley racked up a UGA single game record, 273 all purpose yards, and 4 total TDs! If UGA’s coaching staff gets him 20+ carries per game he’ll be hoisting the hardware come December.
